As a black belt (4th degree) training since 2000, I have been to many academies from the west coast to the east coast, and I can tell you that Gracie Barra Lake Charles has their act together! On my first visit there yesterday, I was seriously impressed by both the caliber of students (clean techniques, strong at each belt, etc) and the safe, respectful training atmosphere. There were over 25 students training on a Saturday (over twice the number at my home academy), and absolutely none of them were awkward or aggressive in any negative way. I left exhausted after a bunch of fun, challenging, technical, proper BJJ rolls... and with a good number of new friends. The head instructor, Professor Jaime, sets a smooth, focused pace to the class, and I even got to roll with him during open mat. He is solid and smooth (and super friendly). This will definitely be my go-to drop-in school whenever I'm in Lake Charles!
I love training here!! I like to drop in for the Saturday classes when I'm in town visiting my family. It's always a little intimidating coming to train at a new gym, but the people here are so warm and welcoming, they make it an absolute joy. Every single person I have rolled with has been a quality training partner, putting me at ease and matching my energy. This gym's culture is fantastic. I look forward to my next Saturday class! đ
Professor Jaime is a gentleman for letting me drop in and enjoy safe and technical training at his gym. Awesome time and felt all the students took care of me as a white belt!
I was working a turnaround in Lake Charles and hit up just about every BJJ gym around these guys were the only ones not charging some crazy mat fee, so that already stood out. Iâll be real, I always heard the whole âGracie Barra is kinda cult-ishâ thing, so I wasnât sure what to expect⌠but man, I was way off. These guys were legit. Walked in and the place is clean, big mat space, just an all-around solid setup. You can tell right away itâs a serious training environment but still super welcoming. And the skill level? No joke. I wrestled 4 years and have been doing BJJ about 6, and they were straight up putting it on me. Had me feeling like it was my first week again đ but thatâs exactly the kind of room you want if youâre trying to get better. What I liked the most was how they ran the class. The instruction was detailed but easy to follow, nothing rushed, and everything actually made sense when you drilled it. Overall, I really enjoyed training here. Good people, tough rolls, and a great vibe. Iâll definitely be back next time Iâm working in the area. 10/10âappreciate yâall letting me drop in.
The best place to train! Coaches are incredible, the people are truly wonderful. Everyone wants to see each other succeed and builds each other up. Itâs so nice to walk into a gym and have other females-from beginners to advanced belts train. Highly recommend this gym for ALL ages!!
