I was looking for an accepting, welcoming place to get back into kickboxing after taking a 9-10 year break. This is the perfect place! The coaches are wonderful & so are the attendees. The coaches never expect you to show up regularly, but when you do show up, they welcome you back with big smiles. They are also super helpful & kind when giving you feedback. I love this place & this community!
I Googled martial art schools back in January 2023 (when Boombox was previously known as MKG) to begin learning basic martial art techniques. I have a toddler son and was looking to explore an unfamiliar routine of exercise and meet new people. When I arrived to my first session, I felt so welcomed by the class, which was without a doubt a direct reflection of the owner's (Kurt) values for building the martial arts community. Kurt has been remarkably kind, encouraging, and meets individuals where they are at in their journey. Judge free zone couldn't describe Boombox any better. The school's culture is supportive and I am thankful to have gained a community of friends. If youre looking to explore martial arts and be a part of a diverse community of students, look no further.
Best martial art gym in metro Detroit! One of the best investments me and my partner have added to our lives for 1 year+ now. Coach Kurt is knowledgeable, inviting, encouraging, and an all around cool guy (with sick music taste)! Everyone is friendly and takes care of one another. The veterans at the gym have grown to become family and are excellent at welcoming newcomers with big smiles and patience.
My son has been attending the Rising Warriors program for 5 months now. I'm really proud of him for wanting to stick with it even though its not always easy for him. Coach Amariah and coach Kurt are fantastic! I appreciate the patience, humor, and humility they show while creating a fun and educational class for the students that is clearly rooted in deep knowledge and reverence they have of the martial arts traditions. In addition to teaching fundamental physical techniques, they also exercise concepts like focus and self-control; not an easy feat especially with students age 4-6! I'm so impressed with the quality of service and high value to price, I'm interested in joining a class myself and would encourage other aspiring students to do the same!
I've been training at MKG Detroit for about two months so far, coming in without any previous martial arts training. The teachers & students at MKGD are very welcoming, and immediately made me feel comfortable. Kurt has an insane amount of knowledge and experience across multiple disciplines, and teaches with patience, awareness of individual needs, and a sense of humor that keeps the classes fun. It's made a big difference in my life, I highly recommend!
