I chose to start my jiu jitsu journey here at Academy 231 and I couldn’t have made a better choice. As a beginner I was nervous, but Steve and all the students have gone above and beyond to provide a safe, welcoming, and positive environment that nurtures progress. Everyone I’ve interacted with here has been friendly and helpful in developing my understanding of this sport. They provide an atmosphere in which I’m excited to go to class each week and I’m looking forward to continue learning here. If you’re considering, I absolutely recommend Academy 231.
My 16 yo son and I joined the beginner program recently and have been very pleased so far. Everyone is very supportive and welcoming. Great culture and solid training!
I’ve only trained once so far at Academy 231 Jiu Jitsu, but I had a great first experience and I’m excited to keep training. The gym has a welcoming, professional atmosphere and felt very beginner-friendly. The instructor explained Brazilian Jiu Jitsu techniques clearly, with an emphasis on fundamentals and safety, which made the class approachable even as someone new to BJJ. The facility was clean, and the other students were respectful and supportive. If you’re in West Michigan, especially Muskegon and Fruitport and looking for a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gym, BJJ classes, or self-defense training, this is an excellent place to start.
Trained here for the first time and it was a great experience. The owner is super cool and welcoming, which immediately sets the tone for the place. Everyone there was friendly, respectful, and willing to help — no weird egos at all. As a first-timer, I felt comfortable jumping in and learning. The atmosphere is solid, the training is legit, and you can tell there’s a real community here. Definitely recommend and I’ll for sure be back!

The environment is welcoming and respectful, with a strong sense of community. What really stands out is how involved, Steve, the owner is. He’s actively engaged in the day-to-day training and takes the time to get to know members personally, creating a genuine sense of connection and care throughout the gym. Classes are well-structured, combining technical instruction, drills, and live training in a way that’s approachable for beginners yet engaging for more experienced students. The facility is clean and well-maintained, and everyone is always friendly and supportive. I highly recommend Academy 231 to anyone interested in learning jiu-jitsu in a positive, beginner-friendly environment led by a team that truly cares about their students.
