First, just want to mention, I’m a germophobe, and even with that I’m still comfortable coming here. If that kind of thing is stopping you from being interested in bjj, I would at least stop in and check things out for yourself before making a decision. But anyways, I would certainly recommend coming here. My first day of class was free, to give me a feel of what things were like. I just dropped in a day prior and told Filipe I was interested, and was invited to try things out at the gym from there. Jiu jitsu, and the way it’s taught here, is very interesting in the way it makes you a better version of yourself. It also very naturally helps you set aside or put away any mental garbage, since it’s not going to feel so important when blood is pumping and things are getting live on the mats. I am a big fan of Filipe both as a teacher and as a person. He blends old-world heart and experience with new-world practicality and familiarity, in a way that is both very engaging, and very relatable and understandable. He also has the very best interests of his students at heart, and wants to see them succeed and do the best they can. I’ve never felt forced or pressured to perform or exceed myself in a way that made me uncomfortable; I would describe it as that I was encouraged and propped up to do the best that I could, while being provided all the support to actually make that happen. And finally, all the people are fantastic. There is not one person at this gym who I don’t think is at least a sound, solid, good individual, while there are very many who I would say are nothing short of fantastic folks. The people around me add so much to the feeling of being there, not to mention the effectiveness of my training. If you end up wanting to stop in, feel free to say hi to a guy that looks like Carrot Top’s estranged younger brother, that’s me.
Felipe offers an exceptional program for kids. The program entails structure, discipline and accountability via learning the fundamentals of jiu jitsu in a very positive way. The energy of the collective in his space is very upbeat and positive. I chose this program for my children because I think self defense is a very important skill to have in the world today. Jiu jitsu gives my kids something to work toward and continue to learn and practice self defense. He also offers adult classes which one day I will be joining one of them when my schedule is less hectic, but I have heard only good things- specifically about the women’s class.
Filipe is an excellent instructor and created a great environment for getting into the sport, as well as taking your skills to the next level. He and the community there are so welcoming and encouraging, making it easy to come back every day. I am very pleased with the skill, discipline, and friendships I've already made in my short time being there. Highly recommend.
Where do I even start? I've been training with Filipe for over six years now and it has completely changed my life for the better. The quality of the instruction at this academy is top notch. Filipe has a TON of knowledge and experience in the sport that he brings to each and every training session. He is committed to making each of his students the best they can be both in the sport and personally. Training with Filipe has made me a better athlete, husband, co-worker, and overall better person. In addition to the top-tier training, the environment and culture that has been cultivated over the years is amazing. The gym is a welcoming and accepting environment where everyone is respected and valued. These people are more than just training partners to me, they're my friends and family. So whether you're looking for a fun way to get some exercise and try a new sport, or a serious competitor looking for quality instruction and dedicated training partners, this gym has it all. If you want one hell of an instructor that knows their craft, Filipe is your person. He knows his gym, his students, and he’s a professional that teaches you how you need to be taught. He gets to the root and heart of his students so we learn at our own speeds. This is why I keep coming back to the best academy in the area. Filipe and my teammates are what define this place, pop in, bring your gear, and get after it. You won’t be disappointed!
