I've been dropping in to train here every year for the past three years, and it's honestly become one of the highlights of my trips to South Lake Tahoe. What makes this place special is that it isn't your typical jiu-jitsu academy. The instruction is rooted in ecological jiu-jitsu, creating an environment where learning feels natural, engaging, and highly effective. Rather than simply memorizing techniques, you're constantly developing timing, awareness, problem-solving skills, and adaptability through live interaction. Beyond the training itself, the culture is exceptional. Every time I visit, I'm welcomed like an old friend. The atmosphere is safe, encouraging, and family-friendly, with training partners who are skilled, respectful, and genuinely invested in helping each other improve. As someone who has trained in many different places, I can say this academy offers something unique. The coaching is thoughtful, the environment is positive, and the community they've built is something special. Whether you're brand new to jiu-jitsu or have years of experience, you'll find outstanding instruction and a group of people who make you want to keep coming back. Three years later, I still look forward to training here every time I come to Tahoe.
South Tahoe Jiu Jitsu is a must for training in South Tahoe. Chris runs a great program and does a great job of training adults and kids for competitive BJJ.
I am visiting for vacation and found this gem of a gym. Great training partners, felt very welcome and safe environment. Chris is a great instructor! I’ll definitely train here again. I highly recommend to give this place a try!
My experience here should concern any parent. My 7-year-old was placed into a 9–14-year-old class with older, more experienced kids. During free sparring, he was being physically overpowered, and in that moment there was no meaningful instructor correction or intervention. I understand this is a contact sport. What I don’t accept is a young child being put in that position without consistent supervision and guidance. During that free sparring portion, my son became visibly upset and was close to quitting. I gave brief encouragement to help him stay composed, stay engaged, and not shut down under pressure. After that, he regained confidence and was able to continue. I raised a safety concern as a parent. That’s it. Instead of addressing the concern, the situation was turned on me and I was removed from the program. No clear rule was identified. No specific conduct was explained. No documentation or details were provided — only general references to “records” and “witnesses.” After that, the narrative shifted to place fault on me. I did not threaten anyone. I submitted a written concern focused on my child’s safety and the environment he was placed in. A parent speaking up about safety should not result in removal. Because of how this was handled, my son lost access to something he was starting to enjoy and build confidence in. Take that into consideration before enrolling your child.
I had a great week thanks to Chris and Chris. I really appreciated their situational teaching style — very practical and helped me improve quickly. They also made sure everyone trained safely. I learned a lot. Thank you, Chris!
