My husband was active in Rock Steady Boxing - Tri city Seacoast, for several years. He loved going and loved being with others who also struggled with Parkinson's Disease. Steve Warren, the Coach and owner of the club, worked each person to their ability, and a little more. He was so patient with each student.
Definitely still in business! My daughter and myself trained under Sensei Warren for several years. She started when she was about 8 years old and continued through high school. When she is home on college breaks she makes a point to get over to the dojo and train. She is in graduate school now and, still, to this day, she attributes much of her personal and academic success to the discipline and integrity she learned through training with Sensei Warren. While it was not an easy road, she is proud of the fact that every grade promotion was definitely earned and worth the effort. As a parent, I will say this was one of the best decisions I ever made. I am incredibly proud of the adult she has become and thank Sensei Warren for contributing to this outcome. Additionally, the comrade among the members is incredibly strong and supportive. Personally, training became a priority and commitment that I enjoyed and found to be an overall stress relief. I cannot recommend this dojo enough, especially for students who struggle with ADHD, other learning disabilities, or who are just in need of structure and support. If my daughter were not out in New Mexico for graduate school, she would be training with Sensei Warren to this day, several times per week. This is a committed instructor.
I had trained in karate for 4 years in my mid to late teens and, as life often has a way of becoming busy and full, I had not trained for decades. Now at 50 years old, I was looking to begin again. I went and watched sessions at multiple dojos in the area. NEWMA’s Shotokan Karate training offered the most disciplined level of training with an emphasis on strengthening the mind, spirit, and body by pushing me to grow stronger and be the best I can be. The instructor and upper-level students are knowledgeable, attentive and consistently strive to help those learning to improve their skills. While this is not a casual martial arts experience, it is beginner-friendly and Instructer Warren and the other members of the dojo are great people who genuinely care about your wellbeing and learning. They are intent on training to improve your physical and mental abilities in an atmosphere that fosters tradition, respect, and builds character. Because of the people here, you will definitely reap the rewards of the effort you put into your training. I have been very happy with my results so far (5 months of training and I’ve lost weight, gained strength, and improved my mental focus). For adults, NEWMA offers 4 training sessions per week. Witnessing classes for children, the instructor works extremely well with kids while instilling the importance of discipline and respect, not only in training, but in all areas of life. If you are looking for martial arts training that is more traditional rather than casual, I would highly recommend NEWMA!
My son has been practicing karate at this place for three years, and we can confidently say that it is a great experience for him. Sensei Steven is an exceptional coach who brings a blend of expertise and discipline to the class. The staff are friendly and supportive, creating a positive training environment.
We really like Rochester Shotokan Karate. My son has been training there for over two years and has learned a lot. He has improved strength, self control and learned about body mechanics and self defense. Sensei always explains the meaning of different moves and teaches practice with full effort. My son is also learning from other students senior to him as well as helping to teach those that are newer to the dojo. I like the culture of respect at RSKD and that every student there, adult of child is encouraged to help others.
