Dropped in on a Wednesday for some no-gi rolls while on a business trip. The school is relatively convenient to the Metro, about a 10 minute walk from DuPont circle (Red Line). They are in the basement of the Edlavitch DCJCC. Locker rooms, showers, and security that you have to pass through to get in. Kelly (the owner) and all of the other instructors and students were super friendly and accommodating, welcoming me in as a complete stranger with open arms (and some devastating RNCs). An hour of instruction followed by an hour of rolls! The mats are well used, but in good condition and were cleaned both before and after class. I’ll be heading back for the GI class tomorrow!
Got the opportunity to drop in at Vortex last week. Kelly was amazing. His teaching style goes beyond the move and into the subtle aspects that make a move successful. It was a pleasure to spend time with him on the mat. His team was full of eager and friendly folks. If you’re in the DC area, this should be one of your first stops when looking for a BJJ gym.
Stopped into vortex jiu jitsu while on a business trip, I just started training, and try and find good gyms on my travel to continue training. Let me tell you, this is the best BJJ studio I’ve ever visited on business. Kelly was so inviting, instructors took time to coach, the members were inviting and connected with me like I’ve been here for a year! If you are thinking about starting or even trying out Jiu Jitsu on DC. You HAVE to stop by vortex!
Cannot recommend vortex enough. Kelly is the absolute goat, and the other coaches are equally phenomenal. My favorite thing about Vortex is the approach they take to beginners. They do an excellent job balancing creating a safe and supportive environment, while also not coddling you to make sure you are able to test your skills and grow. I cam in with next to zero martial arts experience and felt so welcomed and supported. Have learned so much so quickly and had a blast doing it.
I train over at beta academy a few blocks away, but dropped into vortex for an open mat. A few logistics up front: parking can be tricky so plan ahead. Also, it's downstairs and through a set of double doors near the changing rooms. After figuring out where to go, I got changed in the locker rooms (more on that later) and enjoyed over an hour of rolls. Kelly is a phenom at BJJ and also a great instructor taking time out of the open mat to help some students troubleshoot some stuff. The other grapplers there were equally respectful and safe. No subs cranked, people aware of their surroundings, and lots of mutual respect. Mats were also clean and well maintained. The locker rooms are a highlight - plenty of space, showers, and even a steam room if that's your thing. I'd definitely recommend Vortex if you're looking for a permanent training home or just somewhere to drop in
